CAPE MAY – Local Coast Guardsmen helped communities in South Jersey remember the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 by supporting several Patriots Day celebrations Tuesday.
Coast Guardsmen from Training Center Cape May supported three remembrance ceremonies by providing color guards, firing parties, buglers or keynote speakers at the events.
“This is a day to pause, reflect and honor those who were lost including more than 400 first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to rescue their fellow citizens,” said Cmdr. Owen Gibbons, executive officer of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. “We hope to help people mourn the loss of our own and recommit ourselves to the calling of defending the homeland.”
Coast Guardsmen participated in the Cape May County Board of Freeholders 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in Cape May Court House. The training center provided a bugler and a firing party for the ceremony, and Lt. Scott Farr, the commanding officer of Station Cape May, spoke at the ceremony.
The crew of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May also participated in Cape May’s Patriot Day Ceremony at the Cove. Gibbons spoke at that ceremony, and Coast Guard recruits and training center staff provided a bugler and a formation of troops.
Coast Guardsmen also attended a Patriots Day ceremony at Sunset Beach in Lower Township, where Lt. Cmdr. Scott Rae, regimental officer of Training Center Cape May, spoke. Coast Guardsmen and Coast Guard recruits provided a bugler to play taps and a formation of troops.
The crew aboard Training Center Cape May and Station Cape May also gathered at 8 a.m. for a private remembrance ceremony with more than 200 personnel in attendance. A recruit from Recruit Company Bravo 187 laid a wreath at the Douglas Munro Statue during the ceremony in memory of those lost during the attacks on Sept. 11.
“To those in training today, you must remember that you will have the critical task of not letting us forget,” said Gibbons. “As you become leaders and train the next generation of Coast Guard men and women, it will fall to you to ensure the next generation understands the significance of 9/11 and our critical role in learning from it.”
