Lucy the Elephant over 90 tons in Margate New Jersey
Lucy the Elephant is America’s oldest roadside attraction. It’s a giant, 66 foot, 90 ton statue of an elephant located on the New Jersey shore near Atlantic City. Lucy was built in 1881 and has been a tourist attraction for many years. Recently, Lucy was almost condemned in favor of building beach side condos. Luckily, a major grassroots fund raising effort has kept Lucy alive and has made it a National Landmark. This story tells about the life of Lucy the Elephant, as we go inside and meet the curators, the visitors, and tell Lucy’s story.
On a recent trip to Margate over the summer we took some up front pictures of Lucy the Elephant including those round eyeball windows and we also get up close to the rear end of Lucy.
